Like most awards in the world of blog, the Deer Cupcake Award is really another disguise for the dreaded meme. But I won one!!! So, what else could I do but participate (thanks to my e-friend David Kirk over at Frogtown for the acknowledgement). And here are the rules for accepting this prestigious honor:

  • I must answer all the following questions on this blog,
  • I must replace one question I dislike with a question of mine own invention,
  • and then I must add one additional question. Eventually, some poor blogger, who seeks to accept this award, will wind up having to answer a hundred questions, huh? But not today!
And heeeeeere we go--

1). What is your current obsession?
Usage—it’s been an obsession for a long time. It’s why I occasionally include the “Word Police” category on this blog. It’s also why I get aggravated with big
house publishers who should know better but crank out books full of those pesky typos that were missed by the spell/grammar check software since all the line editors were “let go” for financial reasons. So much for integrity.

2). Where are you right now?
Mulberry Grove—look it up.

3). Coffee or tea?
Depends on the mood: coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon . . . unless we’re talking about ice cream.

4).What’s one of your favorite movies?

All-time: It’s a Wonderful Life (no secret with my love of Christmas) – but recently I was really moved by Fireproof.

5). What’s one thing you’re looking forward to?
Pastors & Wives retreat with my Blushing Bride—in Branson!!!! Thanks for keeping the kids Mom & Dad!

6). Who was your childhood crush?
I remember Mary Ann was so much more beautiful than Ginger.

7). What is your (current) favorite Song?
The old hymns “Fairest Lord Jesus” and “Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting”.

8). What would you like to get rid of?
15 pesky pounds, but they just act as if they’re here to stay.

9). What’s your favorite book?
Grisham’s A Time to Kill. It’s his first, but still his best.

10). Why did you start your blog?
I needed an outlet to write. I then started a more ministry-related blog, and finally started my book review blog (check them out).

11). If money was not an issue, what is one thing you would purchase for yourself?
A big, big house—part of which would be my family’s living
space, part of which would house a quiet study with all the latest equipment and books for me to do some serious writing, and part of which would be home to the best used bookstore around.

12). If you could live in a foreign country, which one would you choose?
Ukraine—specifically, Crimea . . . Been there, done that, would love to do it again.

13). What is one trait about yourself that you wish you could change?
I have a tendency to procrastinate, but I’ll stop that tomorrow.

14). Chocolate of choice?
Mocha-flavored Blue Bell

15). What is one thing you've changed your mind about in the last ten years? Dr Pepper (used to abhor the stuff, now I can’t get enough)

16). What is one thing you've changed your mind about in the last ten days? I know everything. Yes, I do. No, I don’t.

17) If you had to choose between books and movies and could only read or view one or the other the rest of your life, which would you choose?
Books are imagination builders—movies, imagination binders. Which would you choose?

18) What’s something from your childhood that brings fond memories? Slush Mug! This was great fun--and now I find that you can still get one. If anyone is listening, I've got a birthday coming up! (Red or Blue is fine ;))

Page 56 Anyone?

Everyone seems to be playing the "grab a book" meme. Bill Crider joined in the version that includes "the bookworm award" a couple of days ago! My friend Kacy from Billy Graham's Electric Rodeo popped one up on her Facebook page. So I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon. The meme says to pick up a book--any one near at hand will do (don't go looking for that intellectual tome to make you look smarter than the average bear), find page 56, and post the fifth full sentence. There are variations on a theme here.

Since I just finished one read (look for a review of Sinner over at Book 'em Benj-O soon), I had to stand up to get a new book. What I found was Ed McBain's Killer's Choice. Here's the obligatory sentence:

"That car'd been repainted."

As memes go, your suppose to tag friends. Since I'm just playing around, anyone who wants to play the game can do so in the comment section here, or pick up the thread on your own blog.

Have fun.

Meme About Movies - The Christmas Kind

Posted by Benjie in ,

John Smulo has started another meme. This time he wants to know about our favorite Christmas movies. I figure, this is right in my bag. Plus, in the spirit of giving, the rules don't require me to specifically target anyone who once was my friend, but lets only those who want to play along. Read the rules:

  1. Write down your four favorite Christmas movies in descending order.
  2. Tag the first ten people who respond in your comment section saying they want to particpate.
  3. (Optional) Include a link to this post and encourage others to place a link to their completed meme in the comments section of this post so we can keep track of the meme.

So, here we go . . .

# 4. The Santa Claus(e) (I'm almost willing to put all three here, they're all great).

# 3. Scrooge (no, not the Bill Murray comedy Scrooged, but the musical with a sad performance by Albert Finney as the title character, still a great movie).

# 2. It's a Wonderful Life (I always feel like Christmas Season isn't really upon us until I've viewed this one.). And my . . .

# 1 all-time favorite Christmas movie is . . . White Christmas (can't watch it without a tear creeping into my eye at the end).

Don't forget to post a comment if you want to join in the Holiday Fun!

Five Things I Dig About Jesus

Posted by Benjie in ,

I loved this meme so much that I just wouldn’t wait to be tagged. John Smulo started it just on Saturday, and it’s already gaining momentum.

Here are the rules:

  1. Those tagged will share 5 Things They Dig About Jesus.

  2. Those tagged will tag 5 people.

  3. Those tagged will leave a link to their meme in the comments section of this post so everyone can keep track of what's being posted.

Here are my “digs” (got to love the lingo):

  1. Jesus reaches me where I am—no muss, no fuss.

  2. Jesus makes me better than I am.

  3. Jesus teaches me in the little things (and the big ones, too).

  4. Jesus knows me, and loves me anyway.

  5. Jesus invites me daily to participate in Kingdom work.

Here are the tags:

  1. Hannah

  2. Charley

  3. Marianne

  4. Tim

  5. Josh

Y’all have fun!

An Annoying, Tagless Meme

Posted by Benjie in , ,

A couple of days ago, Josh started a meme in which you post two things that most annoy you. Then he refused to tag anyone specifically--perhaps to avoid "being tagged for a meme" as an annoyance. Anyway, just to gripe, I'll post my annoyances now:

  1. Telemarketers. I know that people are just doing their job, and that their bosses are just trying to make money, but they always seem to call when I (a) am eating supper, (b) am sitting down to relax after a long day, or (c) have just gotten the kids to bed and have some time with my blushing bride.

  2. Having to wait (wait, wait, wait) when I've made an appointment. I make appointments because my time is valuable, too. This is especially irksome when I'm having to pay for the privilege of seeing the person with whom I've made the appointment.

So there you have it. If you'd like to participate, just add a comment with your gripes here, or post yours and leave me a note that you've done so.

8-Up

Posted by Benjie in , ,

I’ve been tagged by Charley to meme eight random thoughts about myself.

Here are the rules:

  1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
  2. People who are tagged write a blog post about their own 8 random things and post these rules.

  3. At the end of your blog you need to tag 8 people and post their names.

  4. Don't forget to leave them a comment and tell them they're tagged, and to read your blog.

Now for the 8:

  1. I took first year, second semester and second year, first semester Spanish in college as my language requirement. The rule was that I should take second year because of the two years I had in high school, but I couldn’t remember enough to fail the competency test properly.

  2. I learned all I know about The Hobbit from my brother and a couple of friends because I’d tried to read it about eight times never getting past chapter 3. (I’ve since slogged all the way through the book.)

  3. In high school I received the National Council of Teachers of English award in writing for my short story “Keep Your Feet on the Ground, Professor.”

  4. I started having children when most of my peers were preparing for grandkids.

  5. Floods in Brownwood, Texas and Louisiana, Missouri contributed to a slight phobia of that kind of natural disaster.

  6. My older brother and I once rode every roller coaster at the Six Flags park in Georgia.

  7. My favorite part of Sunbeams mission group when I was a preschooler was the graham crackers and kool-aid.

  8. I met my blushing bride at missionary orientation—she was going to Egypt, and I to Ukraine. We married eight months later.

And now for the cheat: I’m going to tag Hannah, Josh, Danny, and you if you’re reading this (that may get up to eight).
