Fifteen Years of Thanksgiving

Posted by Benjie in , ,

Thanksgiving has always been a favorite of mine. I remember the year that I noticed the retailers putting in their Christmas displays earlier and earlier (I think perhaps this year it was in late September or early October) and my only thought was, "We haven't even had Thanksgiving yet!"

So I've always had a tender spot for this particularly American celebration. (I know that Canada has a Thanksgiving Day, too; and that it's on a different day--so the third Thursday of November is American Thanksgiving.)

And so, it isn't just a coincidence that we chose to make Thanksgiving weekend the big time in our family history. And for the past 15 years I have had special reason for giving thanks. God's special gift to me came packaged in a beautiful, loving heartstring named Hannah.

Happy Fifteen my heart of hearts.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Before you get all hot and bothered and upset that I haven't looked at my calendar lately, just remember that you're dealing with what I affectionately call "Benjie Logic" which includes some wonderful twists and turns. Here's how it works -

Valentine's Day is always on the 14th. Today is the 14th Anniversary of the day that my Valentine became my permanent Valentine before God, witnesses, and the pronouncement from the mouths of two fathers (hers and mine).

So, Happy Valentine's Day, my Blushing Bride. Here's looking forward to 144 more such days.

The Blushing Bride spelunking in NW Arkansas August 2011
#25: I'm thankful for my Blushing Bride

If this is so important, one might ask, why didn't it come up earlier in the month? Well for a special reason--today is the 11th anniversary of the day that we stood before our fathers, a company of others, and our Creator to pledge our love and troth to one another. Yep, today's my freedom day--free from the tyranny of wanting to find the right woman, and freedom to love her as Christ loved the church.

Just to let you know, here's why I'm thankful that she said, "I do" back in 2000:

  • She's my lovely
  • She's delightful
  • She's a great mother
  • She treats me like a king
  • She laughs at my jokes
  • She cooks for me
  • She looks good in a dress or in pants
  • She's a good kisser
So, for all these reasons and a million (or so) more, I am thankful.

Thanksgiving

I just want to take a moment, dear reader(s), to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving Day.

Here in the USA we celebrate a day of giving thanks for all our blessings on this day (I know, Canadians have already had theirs). And just to let you know, I can't think of anyone who is more thankful than I am on this particular Thanksgiving Day. ("How brazen," you say. "Why would you make such a claim?" you ask.)

Well, I'm glad you asked! I am the most thankful man on planet Earth today because
  1. I've got Jesus (I shouldn't need anything else--and you can be just as thankful if you accept His salvation and Lordship in your life today--what a great Thanksgiving). But that's not all~
  2. Ten years ago, on this day, The Blushing Bride looked me in the eye, and amidst a lot of giggling (she claims that's my fault) consented, in front of a crowd of witnesses, to spend the rest of our earthly lives with me: HONEYMOON!
  3. We have three beautiful (if not perfect) children.
Top that if you please. Or at least be Thankful.

Eight Is Brass

Some of you will recall that the Blushing Bride and I found similar gifts for our Copper Anniversary. We don't think that will happen again, but I thought I'd share with you our Brass gifts for year eight.

I stumbled upon this possibility and was able to keep it secret from her until this morning.

I must say that the Blushing Bride did well in looking for something that said "I love you" in brass. We have collected candlesticks since we wed eight years ago. She found this candle holder and a nifty snuffer to go with.

I also made some snide remark about it being our brass anniversary, and so did she get me a brass door knocker? At the bottom of the gift bag I found this (she bought it before the remark, I must say). Now I just have to find the perfect place for it.

Ya'll have a good one, and a happy thanksgiving to boot.

8 Is Great!

It was eight years ago that the Blushing Bride became my Blushing Bride by saying, "I will" to me in front of both our dads and a small gathering of friends and family.

Happy Anniversary, Sweetie.

Special message just for you -- Olive, Olive!

Just to let you know, in this day when commitment means nothing, that this lovely couple just celebrated 49 years. Next year we hope to celebrate big with them.

Seven Years is Copper

Posted by Benjie in

Tomorrow the Blushing Bride and I will celebrate seven years of matrimony. Since it's a Sunday and Sundays are always hectic anyway, we left the kids with Hannah's Grandma (who's up from Kentucky) and went out to the Olive Garden. We decided to exchange our gifts for each other while we were out.

Now you must understand that we decided on our first anniversary to try and get a "traditional" gift each year as one of the presents we do for each other. First anniversary was easy--paper; we both are book addicts, so that's easy. On year 5 (wood) was fun, I got a wooden-cased clock and had a cabinet made in the shape of a wardrobe (in honor of her love for C.S. Lewis and all things Narnia). But seven is copper or wool. This year it was time to get creative. We were neither one really excited about wool, and I didn't really want to get Hannah a set of copper bottomed cook pans, we began searching several months ago. I also wanted to steer clear of copper tea kettles. Hannah has a great collection of tea kettles, but she already has two of the copper variety. So we both went shopping at the "antique" stores. Here's the results of our labors:

The one on the left is the one I bought for Hannah. The one on the right is Hannah's gift to me. The only difference is I got gyped out of a platter (Hannah got the better deal), or I got the better deal because I ended up with the one that has the platter included.

48 and Counting!

Today is a special day. On this day in 1959, my parents—Thomas Preston Potter and Martha Jane Weaver—were united in wedlock. Highlights over the years include 4 children, 8 grandchildren, 37 years in the public school classroom, highs and lows associated with serving the local church as pastor, retirements, and I could go on. My folks have celebrated their anniversary by celebrating the birth of a grandchild, taking a cruise, and this year had a driving vacation that took them all the way to Canada and back.

If I could put into words the reasons I have to be thankful for my parents and their faithfulness to one another it would boil down to example. They have lived an example of what family is to be, what marriage ought to be, what love can be, and what faithfulness to the faith should be. Thanks Mom and Dad. Thanks for the example, thanks for the love, thanks, and thanks again.
